Andrew's 2nd grade Book Float
Andrew finally had his chance to build a book float. We've been seeing them the last few years at Open House and it was finally our big 2nd graders turn. We hashed out what book to do for a week or so. Andrew had an idea in his head, but daddy and mommy weren't sure how we were going to draw or create a Geronimo Stilton (and Andrew didn't know either). I took Andrew on a special date one Friday and we got a Frappacino and headed for the dollar store. While walking the aisles at the store he decided he wanted to do "How I Became a Pirate." It was great because we have so many little toy pirates, so we didn't need much. He tied a sled to our furniture mover and we build it up with some boxes. Construction wasn't great (you'll see why later), but we were happy with the end product. We worked away on Mother's Day to get the float built. On Thursday we transported it to school. It made one tumble into the planter as Andrew tried to get it to the car. We made our first repairs...Once we got it to school and he wheeled it to his classroom, we made a few more touch-ups. Andy, Allie, and I stayed to watch the parade that all the 2nd graders do for the entire school. They are so cute and youc an tell that the kids were so proud of their work. When building the float we didn't realize how far they walked in the parade. They made two big laps around the playground. By lap 2, Andrew had a few casualities, and then they circled around the outside of the campus and headed for the office. On his way to the office a large guts of wind came and the furniture mover took a dive into the planter. I didn't witness the event, but thankfully our friend Kari was standing by to help Andrew pick up the pieces. Poor Allie was devastated for her brother. Andrew was a good sport about it, especially when all the kids were asking if he had the "big crash." We picked up the pieces and tried to re-assemble back at the classroom. It got pieced together enough for the evening parade at Open House. Andrew did an awesome job on his oral report for this project as well. Next float...we'll be using a wagon!!!
